Charity
I never really thought of "dissect" a few foundations of our "cultural charity" before an "incident" does come to shake my reflection this subject. The incident in question: early twenties a young man came knocking at our door to ask for our empty bottles.
- Uh ... and that's ? (Thinking that the collection is for an organization)
- Me.
I refused even before knowing that my children had already run back to the corner store, then closed him, puzzled.
Something bothered me in the approach that I can not really identify it.
Let love of each is in constant demand, either. There is a part of duty collective, and share personal consciousness and altruism in real charity.
various agencies who call regularly to beg for items, furniture or used clothing to telethons, Radiodon, international aid agencies, volunteer centers, various foundations, each claiming his share of collective charity.
It is still easy to avoid these intensive awareness campaigns to educate borrow media people to give as a call to the community is so broad and sometimes comes from so far away that the "responsibility" individual it is diffuse or abstract.
When the beggar in front of you with blue hair unkempt, his piercings, his squeegee and his actions decided at the corner of Sherbrooke and St-Denis, you need a little more firmness to assert it is "poor" you want to help. You are confronted directly. Perhaps you prefer the fleece of guitarist Henri-Bourassa, of beggars out of the 720 or those entering the cafes with their history synthesized on a card by presenting it to clients without uttering the word, hoping be fast enough to avoid getting caught by the owners.
But that's ok, you go downtown, you expect to soliciting individual in all its forms. In our Quebec, there are places to ask for charity for himself and the city center is one.
What made me uncomfortable with this man came to beg for my bottles, that his transgression of the rules of the unwritten code of charity (code that definitely needs to change depending on location, the culture): it dares to disturb people at home if it is done for an organization larger than yourself that it targets, and familiar with a specific environment: Scouts are asking for empty bottles that you delay exchange, the club's youth skating you want to sell chocolate, those high school district that you want encouraged to pay their trip in Switzerland, those of the hockey club to finance a trip, etc..
Quest for itself by going door to door is bold. Should we see it as a service: I'll get rid of those bottles that will clog and I may make a supplemental income or as an input for easy money or the pure love? I do not know yet.
Anyway, it is much easier to "choose his case" than "his poor choice." In this way, no possible discrimination.
UPDATE: I re-read and I look ruthless and heartless. You "feel" you, the species of unwritten rules of ling home?
